THE MARTYROLOGY
by Dom Michael Nicolls, O.S.C.
Abbot of Northshire

Preface
At the end of the Office of Matins, on the feast days of saints, it is tradition in some monasteries to read a short summary of the saint's life so that all in the monastery may be edified by the heroic deeds of the blessed martyrs and confessors who devoted themselves so nobly to the Light. Therefore, I present to the faithful, but particularly to monks, a collection of such short stories so that all may learn of the noble lives of the saints and thereby live the virtuous life.

When an entry of the Martyrology is read, the lector says:
On this day, the Church of N. celebrates . . .

The name of the local church of the Saint is given, followed by the summary given below. After this has been done, the lector says:
And elsewhere in other places, many other holy martyrs and confessors.
R: Thanks be to the Holy Light.
