by Dom Michael Nicolls, O.S.C.
Abbot of Northshire
At the end of the Office of Matins, on the feast days of saints, it is tradition in some monasteries to read a short summary of the saint's life so that all in the monastery may be edified by the heroic deeds of the blessed martyrs and confessors who devoted themselves so nobly to the Light. Therefore, I present to the faithful, but particularly to monks, a collection of such short stories so that all may learn of the noble lives of the saints and thereby live the virtuous life.
When an entry of the Martyrology is read, the lector says:
On this day, the Church of N. celebrates . . .
The name of the local church of the Saint is given, followed by the summary given below. After this has been done, the lector says:
And elsewhere in other places, many other holy martyrs and confessors.
R: Thanks be to the Holy Light.
9 - Saint Davil Crockford (Paladin and Martyr)
Patron saint of Pioneers
In Lordaeron, the memorial of Saint Davil Crockford, who is called "Lightfire". A Knight of the Silver Hand, Davil fought nobly at the Battle of Darrowshire during the Third War. His heroic deeds are recorded in the Annals of Darrowshire along with his piety and devotion to the sacred text. A relic of his beatitude is kept in Hearthglen. This sacred libram, which was captured by the Scarlet Crusade after the Third War, is a source of great spiritual merit for Paladin squires of the Argent Crusade. His service to the Light culminated in Martyrdom as he was slain by minions of the Scourge.
13 - Columban Blackmoore (Priest and Doctor)
Patron saint of Luxologians
In Lordaeron, the memorial Saint Columban Blackmoore. Columban was educated at the Archabbey of Tirisfal in the sacred sciences and later served as a professor of the philosophy of Saint Quomas. After meeting disapproval for his orthodox presentation of sacred doctrine, Columban was ousted from the Monastery shortly before the great Archabbey fell from communion with the Church. He remained as pastor in Vandermar Village until his death. His spiritual diary was noted for its merit by the scholars of the Church and was canonized as part of the Codex of Scripture by his student, who later became Archbishop Columban V. Blackmoore died of a fever at the age of forty-three.
17 - Aderic of Gilneas (Patriarch and Confessor)
Patron saint of Gilneas
In Gilneas, the Solemnity of Saint Aderic the Patriarch. Aderic is the patriarch of the House of Greymane, the ruling house of Gilneas. He is credited for the spreading of orthodox doctrine across the Gilnean nation and rooting the Gilnean people in the true service of the Light. His tomb is venerated as a place of pilgrimage to this day and is the shared resting place of all the later rulers of Gilneas in the house of Greymane. He died peacefully after reciting many sacred prayers to the Light for the good of his children.
23 - Erol Evensworth (Paladin and Martyr)
Patron saint of Weaponsmiths
In Ironforge, the memorial of Saint Erol Evensworth. A Knight of the Silver Hand, Erol was tasked with the duty of forging weapons which were blessed with a sacred character making them more capable of defending the people of the Light from the minions of the Scourge. After successfully forging many such weapons, his efforts were noticed by the Lich King who sent many a spectral assassin to destroy his work. In this way, Erol gained the glory of martyrdom as he was consumed by the flames of his burning smithy.
